THE TERMINOLOGY
SOUND CORRECTION AND SOUND ABSORPTION
The starting point to achieve optimal acoustic comfort is to understand the problem you are facing.
When we talk about reverberation we mean the annoying "echo" effect that sound waves generate when they reflect on surrounding surfaces, creating a sort of "sound queue" and giving rise to the annoying background noise that is often heard in crowded places.
A sound correction intervention can solve this problem: starting from the measurement of the reverberation time (time necessary to obtain a 60 dB reduction in sound level from the moment the sound emission from the source stops, ed.), a detailed acoustic design is carried out and a decision is made where to apply the sound-absorbing material which, thanks to its physical and morphological characteristics, allows to hinder the propagation of sound waves, decreasing the reverberation time and giving comfort to the environment in which it is applied.
THE LEGISLATION
WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?
Current Italian legislation is not entirely comprehensive when it comes to indoor acoustics: there are no limits or guidelines about the appropriate reverberation time in indoor spaces. The only exception is school buildings (classrooms and gyms). In this regard, Prime Ministerial Decree 5/12/1997 “Determination of Passive Acoustic Requirements of Buildings” refers to the Ministry of Public Works Circular No. 3150 of May 22, 1967, which specifies as average values for reverberation time, measured at frequencies 250-500-1000-2000 Hz, a limit of 1.2 sec for classrooms and 2.2 sec for gyms.
A further evolution is represented by the Ministerial Decree of 11 October 2017 and the Ministerial Decree of 23 June 2022 which refer to the CAM (Minimum Environmental Criteria). The CAMs take up the topic of acoustic comfort in public building environments newly built or subject to first level renovation and refer to what is specified in the UNI 11532-2:2020 standard relating to the internal environments of school buildings and to what is specified in the UNI 11367 standard :2023 regarding the interior environments of non-school buildings. With reference to the general requirements, linked to design methods and evaluation techniques, the regulatory reference is UNI 11532-1:2018. Publications regarding other types of closed premises (offices, restaurants, gyms, hospitals, etc.) are expected in the future.
NOISE POLLUTION
THE EFFECTS OF NOISE ON OUR HEALTH
Noise pollution currently represents a worsening element of the quality of life. Several studies have shown how prolonged exposure to sources of noise can cause damage to health, both to the general state of the individual and, more specifically, to the hearing system.
Each of us spends most of our time in closed spaces such as the office, home, school or restaurant: it is therefore important that the environments frequented daily are comfortable from an acoustic point of view, in order to avoid repercussions on our health.
The mission of Isolspace Skin is to combine acoustic comfort and design, giving the spaces of everyday life a new dimension, not only aesthetic but also comfort.
